Phone Review: Nokia E5

Posted by NO-one | 12:49 PM | 0 comments »

With the mobile phone arena dominated by various iterations of touch screen phones, it can be hard to understand why there still is a big market for a QWERTY communicator phone. But Nokia has a long history of churning out quality phones that cater to their specific audiences. The E71 can be seen as Nokia's flagship QWERTY communicator device, and was improved upon with the launch of the E72, but the latest addition to the Nokia QWERTY family comes with the announcement of the E5.
The Nokia E5 combines all of the business-oriented features of a candy bar phone with a full keyboard, together with the integration of consumer services such as social networking support and mobile internet browsing capabilities. It also is a welcome addition with its compact but useful form factor, with its keyboard buttons being just the right size to tap out an extended text or email with your thumbs in a matter of seconds.
It also squeezes in a 5 megapixel 'extended depth of field' camera into the overall package, meaning that should you find yourself needing to capture the moment happening around you, or simply photograph the cutest cat you've found to your Facebook account, you're more than in luck.
Also included is the Nokia Email application which allows your personal or business inbox to have its emails pushed to your handset, perfect for the pay monthly businessman or the connected teen.
Nokia has also included the latest version of its Symbian operating system, which contains a notable amount of enhancements over previous versions. This includes the ability to easily connect to Wi-Fi networks at the tap of a button as well as share files over Bluetooth and the option of accessing the Ovi Store to download any applications you want. Battery life is also stellar with over 36 hours of life.
There also is the inclusion of Ovi Maps, a free GPS navigation service Nokia released last year. The Ovi Maps application allows you not only to access maps of nearly all the major countries of the world for free, it also allows you to download them to your memory card and includes the fantastic option of 'turn by turn' voice guided navigation, something that has come at a price from various competitors over the last few years. This comes in as a killer tool when out and about, as not only does it save you money as it isn't eating away at your data allowance, it also is usable wherever you are, whenever due to it being tucked away on your memory card for instant access.
The phone comes competitively priced as well, with many major networks in the United Kingdom offering the phone at a reasonable price on pay as you go tariffs, and deals usually include a more than generous data allowance, meaning you can tweet and poke to your heart's content.
The Nokia E5 definitely is a compelling product coming from the Finnish mobile phone powerhouse. Packing in all the latest features consumers are used to, it definitely caters to the youth segment with its social networking integration, whilst also for its business customers by including a line of productivity applications that are sure to help you with your daily tasks.

The rumors that the new iPhone will be unveiled middle of this year has created another wave of rumors and discussions all across the Internet and continues to drag tech fanatics like yours truly into the bandwagon of gadget chatter and ESP predictions. But this time, tech gurus will surely need extra ESP to find out what Apple has in store or maybe hire a double agent to spy on Apple labs to at least get decent leak of information for the upcoming iPhone successor.
We were actually lucky with the current iPhone 4 because of the unprecedented accidental leak of an iPhone 4 proto-type that was left by a semi drunk Apple engineer who took it out to be field tested. Unfortunately for him and fortunately for us, he got a bit too excited on his birthday bash and after sending his last Facebook post via this proto-type iPhone 4, it was the last time he ever saw it. The next thing he knew, Gizmodo, a popular website was tearing the Apple pro-type apart thinking that it was an iPhone from the future since its features and design was very different from the current iPhone version of at that time which was the 3GS.
After some tedious experiments, they finally concluded that this phone was not a fake and it might just as well be a prototype of the next gen of iPhones to be released. And it sure was. Even if Steve Jobs and company didn't like that fact that Gizmodo kind of killed the excitement of the official unveiling of the iPhone 4, there was nothing much that he could do except be extra careful this time around.
As for the upcoming iPhone 5, just what can we expect from Apple with a leaked prototype? Well, there are rumors that Apple will attempt to knock off Nokia's NFC technology because so far, NFC or Near Field Communications is the direction of the future. With NFC technology in your mobile phone, you can use your Smartphone as if it was a credit card. You can buy concert tickets in an instant by "tapping" your NFC supported phone to a poster of a concert you would like to see and you can reserve and buy tickets at the very second.
Insurance companies are now considering this possibility because they are also now starting to promote iPhone 5 insurance in the UK. IPhone 5 insurance will likely have the same features of the current smart phone policies but if Apple will compete with Nokia with the NFC technology, then a variation may occur. Today, if you want to know more about the upcoming iPhone 5 and iPhone insurance, you can already have glimpse; the real score will most likely be June or July of 2011.
The future is here! The revolutionary iPhone 5 is guaranteed to make waves so you shouldn't be left behind! iPhone 5 insurance will insure this incredible iPhone model. Learn about insurance for iPhone 5 today!

Choosing cell phone plans is overwhelming due to the number of carriers and plans available. There are a few key points to keep in mind when making your selection to ensure you've chosen a plan that suits your needs. Although it seems like carriers are trying to trick, you, there ARE techniques that allow you to get what YOU want.
Deciding What You Need
  1. In order to choose a cell phone plan, you first need to know what the coverage is like in your area. There is no point in buying a cell phone which you can't use in your own home! Ask your friends and family what carrier they use, as well as what their coverage is like in your town. Make sure to ask the cell phone carrier what the boundaries are before you are considered roaming, because you don't want to pay roaming fees in your own town. Additionally, if you often travel, you need to ask the carrier how much it costs to call, text, and use data (if applicable) when you are roaming.
  2. Next, you need to identify how many minutes you use in a month. If you currently have a cell phone, contact your carrier and ask them how many minutes you use each month. If you do not have a cell phone, consider this: Allow three minutes for each phone call you would typically make. For example, for someone who makes one phone call per day, they would want a plan with 100 minutes per month. However, most carriers have times each day when calls are free, and some plans allow for free incoming calls. These two features will reduce your required monthly minutes.
  3. Consider how many text messages you send in a month. Again, if you currently have a cell phone, you can call your carrier and ask them how many text messages you send each month. If you do not have a plan that includes text messaging, most companies charge 15 cents per text message! For example, if you send 5-10 text messages per day, you should look for a plan with 250 text messages per month. Consider unlimited text messaging if you send more than 100 text messages per day. Upgrading to a plan with unlimited text messages is usually better value than adding an unlimited text messaging add-on to your plan.
  4. Decide whether you need data. Many "smartphones" available these days require data to access internet, email, and other online services. If you think you'll only surf the web occasionally and you don't get much email, 100MB per month should be plenty. If you occasionally watch videos and listen to music online, you should consider getting 500MB. For people who love YouTube, consider looking for a plan with unlimited data. Data add-ons are often cheaper than upgrading to a plan that already includes data.
  5. Be sure to ask about contracts. To get your phone at a reduced price, most phone companies require you to sign a three-year contract. (If you want to pay full price for your cell phone, you do not need to sign a contract). If you break this contract, you'll be required to pay a large fee. If you want to upgrade your cell phone on the middle of your contract, cell phone companies allow this. It is usually cheaper to finish your contract before getting a new phone. Regardless of whether you think you'll want a new phone, be sure to check how long you have to wait before you can upgrade your phone, and what fee they will charge.
  6. Use retention plans to your advantage. If you do not have a contract with a cell phone carrier, you can call customer service, explain that you are not happy with your current service, and ask to be transferred to the retentions department. You will be able to get extremely cheap cell phone plans which have excellent features, because cell phone carriers will do a lot to keep you as a customer. For this tip, make sure to refer to the "getting what you want" below, to make sure your conversation with the customer service representative goes smoothly. The last time I used this method, I was able to cut my costs by 30% and get about twice as many features as I had before, saving me $700 per year!
Once you have decided what you need out of a plan, search until you find a cell phone plan that meets your needs. There are many carriers and plans available so you are guaranteed to find one that is the right fit for you.
Getting What You Want
If you find an advertised plan that you are happy with, you can sign up online, or in the carrier's store. Online is the fastest and easiest way to get your cell phone plan. Keep in mind that if you go into the store, sometimes they might not have the phone you want in stock, so you may have to wait a week or two before picking up your phone. If you want the carrier to make you a special deal, you will need to phone in and talk to one of their customer service representatives, or CSRs. Below are some tips to make sure you get the best possible deal by talking to your CSR.
  1. The MOST important thing to remember when you talk to CSRs is to remain calm. Many of us have hectic lives and we love taking out anger on others, but you need to KEEP CALM. This means no yelling, screaming, threatening, or being nasty. CSRs deal with hundreds of people every day, and if you give them respect by being nice, they will return the favor. You want to ensure the experience is mutually positive.
  2. Realize that your CSR is a real person. They are only trying to do their job (which is helping you). Do not blame them for "messing up your account;" they are only there to serve you. Additionally, do not tell any CSR how to do their job - would you try to tell a police officer how to do his job when he pulled you over for speeding?
  3. Always get the name of the person who is helping you, and keep a brief record of what they say. Things won't necessarily work out on the first call, so when you call back, you need to know who you've talked to before. You can often use something a previous CSR said to your advantage, but without a name, there is no chance of the cell phone carrier honoring it. This is why it is ESSENTIAL to keep a record of who you have talked to and the things they said.
  4. If your CSR is truly unhelpful, don't be afraid to ask to talk to their manager. If you had a horrible experience at a restaurant, wouldn't you let the manager know? And if you did, do you think he would try to give you some coupons to come back? It works the same way when you are phoning your cell phone carrier.
By using the steps in this article, you can save money, get a plan that meets all your needs, and have great experiences with your carrier's customer service. The high-end smartphone segment is something that has grown incredibly in the last few months, but one cannot really neglect the fact that the budget smartphone industry has also kept pace with this incredible growth. It is largely down to the launch of a number of new phones in this segment and one of most important among them has to be the Nokia E5. This phone was launched by Nokia recently and it will be the phone that will be enabling Nokia to compete with the likes of the BlackBerry and others. Even though it will not be competing directly against the BlackBerry, it is expected to produce a huge dent in the sales of the Research in Motion's sales.
The Nokia E5 will be coming with a display and the full QWERTY keyboard. This has so long in the territory of the BlackBerry phones, but Nokia will once again be pressing their advantage into the mobile phone that has impressed a lot of people. The Nokia E5 will be coming with a full QWERTY keyboard that will be out of the world in terms of the quality, even though this is going to be used in a budget phone, where the features are more important rather than the quality. It is going to be used alongside a screen that measures 2.36 inches in size. Apart from the size, the most important aspect about the screen has to be the fact that it will be able to hold a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. This is extremely high for a phone that has a screen of 2.3 inches in size. The result of this high resolution can be only seen when viewing media files from the phones internal memory or directly from the Internet.
Both are possible due to the presence of an internal memory in the region of 250 MB. It is going to be used alongside a complimentary 2 GB memory card that is going to be included along with the phone. The Nokia E5 will be coming with support to a maximum of 32 GB in the way of external memory cards. The Nokia E5 will be coming with a five megapixel camera that is going to be extremely powerful at taking high quality images. Even though this is a fixed focus camera, it will be able to bring out the best in terms of the quality due to the number of features including the likes of the LED flash. Even though the HD video recording option is not present in the camera, the QVGA resolution videos, which will be recorded at 15 frames per second is more than enough for a phone in this price range. The Nokia E5 will be coming with a battery that is rated at 1200 mAh. Even though this might not sound that powerful for other manufacturer phones, Nokia phones are extremely frugal in the power department and this phone is again shows in the battery life for the Nokia E5.
At Best Mobile Contracts we compare Nokia E5 deals from all the major online retailers. So if you are looking for a Nokia C5-04 on Vodafone, Orange, O2, T-Mobile, 3 or Virgin Mobile, we are sure that we can help.

Are You a Cell Phone Addict?

Posted by NO-one | 12:40 PM | 0 comments »

What is cell phone addiction? Well it could possibly be defined as an unusual affection for your cell phone. Let's face it, we do things with our mobile phones that we would never think about doing with our regular phones. Even if our regular phone is cordless. And, most assuredly, we care about our cell phones far differently than we do about our landlines.

What is causing this widespread condition? Is text messaging the culprit? Maybe it's the ability to play music, play games, access the internet, or watch movies. Don't forget about the thousands of applications that can be added. Quite possibly the addiction may be caused by a combination of all these things?

Maybe it's the names that make them so attractive. Let's see, they are called iPhones, Androids, Smartphones, Blackberries, MyTouch, Palm - oh my goodness, who can resist.
How about you? Are you in denial about your addiction to your cell phone? You can find out for sure by asking yourself the following questions.

1. Do you start to convulse when you have misplaced your cell phone and suddenly realize you turned your ringer off?

2. Do you check your phone every half hour or more for missed calls, voice mail or text messages?

3. Do you take your phone with you to the bathroom?

4. When given the choice of either exceeding your minute allowance or using your regular phone, do you make the call using your cell?

5. Do you place a re-call 10 minutes after you have left a voice mail message?

6. Your mobile phone bill and your regular phone bill are both past due. You only have enough money to pay one. Do you pay your cell phone bill?

7. Have you ever sent yourself a text message just to make sure it was working?

8. When called on your regular phone, do you give the caller your cell number and tell them to call you right back?

9. It will be close, but you know you can make it to work on time. You get down the road a piece and find that you left your cell at home. Do you turn around?

If you answered yes to 1 or more of these questions, you may have a problem. Maybe you have a friend that you have noticed displays some of the characteristics in the above list. Well, you have come to the right place. There is a solution.
Don't fight it? The Cell Phone Club is here for you. We will help you satisfy your addiction each time you visit. Join us today.

Futuristic Mobile Phone by Nokia.

Posted by NO-one | 9:19 AM | 0 comments »

The Nokia Morph is a concept mobile phone created by Finnish company Nokia. The concept, which was unveiled on February 25, 2008 at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City, was the product of a joint study into the future of mobile phones by the Nokia Research Center and the University of Cambridge's Nanoscience Centre. The device was presented as part of the museum's "Design and The Elastic Mind" exhibit. According to Bob Lannucci, Nokia's chief technology officer, the "Nokia Research Center is looking at ways to reinvent the form and function of mobile devices... The Morph concept shows what might be possible."

The device, which is non-functional, is intended to provide a conceptual showcase for future applications of nanotechnology in the realm of consumer electronics. The phone's theoretical feature list would include the ability to bend into numerous shapes, so it can be worn around the wrist or held up to the face; transparent electronics, which would allow the device to be see-through yet functional; self-cleaning surfaces that can absorb solar energy to recharge the phone's battery; and a wide range of fully integrated sensors. Nokia released a computer-generated video demonstrating the capabilities the Morph might have if it were a real mobile phone. The manufacturer believes that some of the device's imagined features could appear in high-end devices by 2015.

Nokia 3310 -The best phone ever sold.

Posted by NO-one | 11:41 PM | 0 comments »

The Nokia 3310 is a dual band GSM900/1800 mobile phone. Released in the fourth quarter of 2000, it replaced the popular Nokia 3210. This phone sold extremely well, being one of the most successful phones with 126 million units sold. Several variants of the 3310 have been released, including the Nokia 3315, 3320, 3330, 3350, 3360, 3390 and 3395.

Design

The 3310 is a compact but somewhat heavy (133 g) phone featuring an 84 x 48 monochrome display. It has a lighter 115 g battery variant which has fewer features; for example the 133g battery version has the start-up image of two hands touching while the 115 g version doesn't. It is a slightly rounded rectangular unit that is typically held in the palm of a hand, with the buttons operated with the thumb. The blue button is the main button for selecting options, with "C" button as a "back" or "undo" button. Up and down buttons are used for navigation purposes. The on/off/profile button is a stiff black button located on the top of the phone. It has a very sturdy design which was big contribution for its success. However, radiation is high with SAR = 0.96 W/kg.

Features

The 3310 is known for having many features built in. These include many utilities, such as a calculator, Nokia network monitor, stop watch and a reminder function. It has four games, 'Snake II', 'Pairs II', 'Space Impact', and 'Bantumi'. It was popular for SMS because it allowed long messages three times the size of a standard SMS, at 459 characters. The phone also has voice dialing for the quick dialling of selected numbers.

Customization

The Nokia 3310 can be customized with interchangeable covers, and thousands of different designs have been produced by various companies. It also has over 35 ringtones built in with space for seven custom tones. These can either be downloaded, or can be composed by the user using the tone composer. The phone has different "profiles" which can adjust the phone to different sets of preferences. For example, there is silent mode where the phone will not ring when inappropriate to do so. Screensavers can be made from received picture messages. It has the option to set a reminder message that displays when it is turned on.

Variants

3315, 3390 and 3395

An enhanced version of the 3310 is the Nokia 3315 which has some additional features:
  • A picture editor to edit pictures for use in SMS Picture messaging & screensavers on the phone
  • Timed profiles
  • Could use received ring tones as SMS tones
  • Fixed some of the bugs found in the 3310
  • Automatic keypad locking after specified time
  • Peanut-like inter-connected silicon keymat
  • Singaporean and Malaysian sold 3315s also had a blue backlight for the LCD screen and keypad, as opposed to green.
  • Similar design to its successor (The Nokia 3410)
The 3315 was also released in Australia. Most versions of the 3310 could be upgraded to include the additional features of the 3315 by using a data cable.
There are two North American variants of the 3310; one is the Nokia 3390, which operates on GSM 1900. The Nokia 3395 is an updated version of the 3390 which includes the additional features of the Asian 3315 model, and it has poor reception if you are in a GSM 850 area.

WAP-enhanced models (3330 and 3350)

The Nokia 3330 was basically a 3310 with a SMS-based WAP capability, animated screensavers, a pinball game named 'Bumper', and phonebook in the phone memory (100 entries) as opposed to being stored on SIM-card in earlier models. It also has the capability of downloading game packs via WAP (Snake II mazes, Bumper tables, Space Impact chapters). Without true GPRS connectivity the WAP feature proved unpopular and the version was unable to replace the 3310 in the European market.

AMPS/D-AMPS-based versions (3320 and 3360)

The Nokia 3360 and 3320 are related models designed for the U.S. and Canadian markets respectively. They are externally similar to the 3310 and 3390, but use Digital AMPS ("TDMA")/AMPS technology rather than GSM.
Like the Asian 3350, they include two dedicated call and hang buttons and two soft keys. They also feature an infrared port. Unlike the 3390, the 3360 and 3320 do not support voice dialing. At 136 gram each, they are also slightly heavier than the 3390, which weighs 119 gram.

Modifications

Old Nokia 3310s (which are often available for a small fraction of their original price) are frequently sought out by hobbyists for their screens. These are graphical LCDs with a resolution of 84x48, and include a Philips PCD8544 controller which is easily controlled using an SPI bus.
The mobile phone features an MBus and FBus.

Codes for Nokia 3310

  • *#06# - displays IMEI number

  • *#0000# - displays version number

  • *#92702689# (*#war0anty#) - displays usage in hrs:min:sec format

  • *3370# , #3370# - for enabling/disabling EFR quality voice mode.

  • *4720# , #4720# - for enabling/disabling HR quality voice mode.

  • An Asia Pacific-only version, known as the Nokia 3350, was in essence an improved 3330 with WAP, rhythmic backlight alert, animated screensavers, two-way Navi-Key, dedicated call and hang buttons, Chinese lunar calendar and a 96x65-pixel screen. Some 3350s have back covers that feature a photo-insert window, allowing users to put personal pictures from photographs, magazine cut-outs, etc.

    Nokia 3210-Tough Mobile Phone Ever.

    Posted by NO-one | 10:16 PM | 0 comments »

The Nokia 3210 was a highly popular cellular phone, released in 1999. With 160 million units sold, the 3210 was one of the most popular and successful phones in history.
A combination of cutting-edge features such as internal antennas and T9 ensured the 3210 huge commercial success. The 3210 can also attribute much of its success to an advertising campaign aimed predominantly at young people, a first in the mobile phone industry. The inclusion of 3 games, changeable covers, an internal antenna, customisable ringtones and competitive prices led to the handset's huge popularity with those aged 15–25. It was also thinner than previous Nokia models.

    Dimensions

The Nokia 3210 has a total weight of 153g. The handset measures 123.8mm x 50.5mm x 16.7mm (min), 22.5mm (max) and features customizable fascias which clip on.

    Notable features

3 Games came preinstalled: Snake, Memory (pairs-memory game), and Rotation. The addition of such games encouraged high sales within a youth market which was enlarging at a very fast rate. Some versions of the 3210 included the "hidden" games React and Logic. They were activated by special software using a data cable.

The 3210 was one of the first mobile phones to feature an internal antenna. This distinguished the handset from others which featured large, awkward and unsightly antenna. Reception, although poorer than that of its predecessor, the 3110, was still very good.

'Picture messages' sent via the SMS texting service were implemented in the handset, allowing users to send preinstalled pictures to one another. These included a 'Happy Birthday' picture amongst others.

The handset was competitively priced and aimed specifically at teenagers and young professionals. This was at a time when few young people had access to a mobile phone, being generally identified with older professionals and business people.

The 3210 was the first to allow users to compose their own ringtone, a substantial benefit as previously customized ringtones could only be sent via SMS and at a charge.

The 3210 was originally designed with a vibrate alert function. Nokia decided not to implement this feature on some handsets within certain jurisdictions. A few months after its UK release, some mobile phone repair shops offered customers a handset upgrade to the vibrate function for a small fee.

Nokia C5-03 will be available worldwide by the end of 2010 with prices around 170 euros (237 USD) or perhaps the price in Indonesia of about 2 million dollars. It is strange that Nokia still launch another Symbian devices ^ 1, when the phone has been obtaining the latest Symbian OS ^ 3.
Nokia C5-03 is also easy to use as a fun approach to email device because there is a POP3 and webmail providers via Nokia’s Messaging and Mail for Exchange no choice.

    Symbian

    What is Symbian?

Symbian is an open source operating system (OS) and software platform designed for smartphones and maintained by Nokia. The Symbian platform is the successor to Symbian OS and Nokia Series 60; unlike Symbian OS, which required an additional user interface system, Symbian includes a user interface component based on S60 5th Edition. The latest version, Symbian^3, was officially released in Q4 2010, first used in the Nokia N8.
Symbian OS was originally developed by Symbian Ltd. It is a descendant of Psion's EPOC and runs exclusively on ARM processors, although an unreleased x86 port existed.
Devices based on Symbian accounted for 43.5% of worldwide smartphone sales in 2010 Q2. Some estimates indicate that the cumulative number of mobile devices shipped with the Symbian OS up to the end of Q2 2010 is 385 million.

    History

The Symbian platform was created by merging and integrating software assets contributed by Nokia, NTT DoCoMo, Sony Ericsson and Symbian Ltd., including Symbian OS assets at its core, the S60 platform, and parts of the UIQ and MOAP(S) user interfaces.
Symbian was intended to be developed by a community led by the Symbian Foundation, which was first announced in June 2008 and which officially launched in April 2009. Its objective was to publish the source code for the entire Symbian platform under the OSI- and FSF-approved Eclipse Public License (EPL). The code was published under EPL on 4 February 2010; Symbian Foundation reported this event to be the largest codebase transitioned to Open Source in history .
However, some important components within Symbian OS were licensed from third parties, which prevented the foundation from publishing the full source under EPL immediately; instead much of the source was published under a more restrictive Symbian Foundation License (SFL) and access to the full source code was limited to member companies only, although membership was open to any organisation.
In December 2008, Nokia bought Symbian Ltd., the company behind Symbian OS; as a result, Nokia has become the major contributor to Symbian's code, as it now had the development resources for both the Symbian OS core and the user interface. Since then, Nokia has been maintaining their own code repository for the platform development, regularly releasing their development to the public repository.
In November 2010, the Symbian Foundation announced that due to a lack of support from funding members, it would transition to a licensing-only organisation; Nokia announced that it will take over the stewardship of the Symbian platform. Symbian Foundation will remain as the trademark holder and licensing entity and will only have non-executive directors involved.

    Version

Symbian releases are styled Symbian^1, Symbian^2 etc. (vocalised as "Symbian one", "Symbian two").
Symbian^1, as the first release, forms the basis for the platform. It incorporates Symbian OS and S60 5th Edition (which is built on Symbian OS 9.4) and thus it was not made available as open source.
Symbian^2 was the first royalty-free version of Symbian. While portions of Symbian^2 are EPL licensed, most of the source code is under the proprietary SFL license and available only to members of the Symbian Foundation. On June 1, 2010, a number of Japanese companies including DoCoMo and Sharp announced smartphones using Symbian^2.
Symbian^3 was announced on 15 February 2010. It was designed to be a more ‘next generation’ smartphone platform. The Symbian^3 release introduced new features such as a new 2D and 3D graphics architecture, UI improvements, and support for external displays through HDMI. It has single tap menus and up to three customizable homescreens. The Symbian^3 SDK was released September 2010.
Four phones with the open source Symbian^3 have been released, the Nokia N8, Nokia C6-01, Nokia E7-00 and Nokia C7-00.
Symbian^4 was expected to be released in the first half of 2011. However, Nokia announced in October 2010 that Symbian^4 will not ship as a separate release. Instead, improvements to Symbian will be delivered as software updates to all current Symbian^3 devices.

    Features

    User interface

Symbian has had a native graphics toolkit since its inception, known as AVKON (formerly known as Series 60). S60 was designed to be manipulated by a keyboard-like interface metaphor, such as the ~15-key augmented telephone keypad, or the mini-QWERTY keyboards. AVKON-based software is binary-compatible with Symbian versions up to and including Symbian^3.
Symbian^3 includes the Qt framework, which is now the recommended user interface toolkit for new applications. Qt can also be installed on older Symbian devices.
Symbian^4 was planned to introduce a new GUI library framework specifically designed for a touch-based interface, known as "UI Extensions for Mobile" or UIEMO (internal project name "Orbit"), which was built on top of Qt; a preview was released in January 2010, however in October 2010 Nokia announced that Orbit/UIEMO has been cancelled.
Nokia currently recommends that developers use Qt Quick with QML, the new high-level GUI and scripting framework for creating visually rich touchscreen interfaces that allows development for both Symbian and MeeGo; it will be delivered to existing Symbian^3 devices as a Qt update. As more applications will gradually feature a user interface reworked in Qt, the legacy S60 framework (AVKON) will be deprecated and no longer included with new devices at some point, thus breaking binary compatibility with older S60 applications

    Browser

Symbian^3 and earlier have a native WebKit based browser; indeed, Symbian was the first mobile platform to make use of WebKit (in June 2005).
Nokia plans to introduce a new Qt-based browser as a free update for Symbian^3 devices.

    Application Development

From 2010, Symbian switched to using standard C++ with Qt as the SDK, which can be used with either Qt Creator or Carbide. Qt supports the older Symbian S60 3rd and 5th editions, as well as the new Symbian platform. It also supports Maemo and Meego, Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.
Alternative application development can be done with using Python (see Python for S60), Adobe Flash or Java ME.
Symbian OS previously used a Symbian specific C++ version along with Carbide.c++ IDE as the native application development environment
Web Runtime (WRT) is a portable application framework that allows the creation of widgets on the S60 Platform; it is an extension to the S60 Webkit based browser that allows to launch multiple instances of the browser as separate JavaScript applications.
